Little sister of Rocksalt, Little Rock is one of the groups venues in Folkestone and ,among a collection of pubs across the Kent countryside. Next door you can find the Pilot bar for a pre- dinner tipple overlooking the palm tree dotted beachside. And with just a few steps you will find yourself at Little Rock, situated in a converted shipping container, the restaurant also has an outdoor seating area for those sunnier days.
Upon arrival, a sip of thoughtfully selected Simpsons Estate Chalkland Cuvee sparkling wine accompanies a whipped cod’s roe mousse, presented on a bed of seaweed and oyster shell welcomes us. This is served with the award winning Docker sourdough bread and salted butter. Anyone local to the area will no doubt have sampled the famous handcrafted delicacy which is offered in various restaurants around the local area, as well being available directly from their bakery in West Hythe.
Little Rock prides itself on serving only the freshest of local produce including locally caught fish and shellfish from the Folkestone Trawler Association, supplying fresh and reasonably sourced fish of the highest quality. To know that everything on offer comes from the Folkestone harbour and surrounding Hythe bay area makes the experience even more satisfying and certainly captures the taste of the coast, which is at the heart of this little seaside restaurant.
Dressed Folkestone crab served with brown crab ketchup and seared local scallops served with butternut squash, crispy sage and toasted seeds are just a few of the starters available on the a la carte menu from which is a must. However, for the main event, we visited on a Friday for the seasonal curry night, available throughout the colder winter months and a perfect way to round off your week and warm up your tastebuds.
A selection of fish curries are on offer with a choice of Asian inspired sauces in a mix and match style menu, an inspiring idea and great for anybody wishing to create their own combination of heat and seafood preference. Delicious combinations and a selection of seasonal favourites cost just £17.50 per person and are all served with steamed basmati rice, sukkah, mango chutney, a poppadom and coriander. Sides include kachumber salad, bombay potato, raita and lime pickle. For the curry a choice between Folkestone huss or prawn is on offer as well as a vegetarian option. Then add your sauce of either tandoori, yellow Thai or Japanese katsu.
With a vibrant cocktail menu and other menus on throughout the week including a bottomless brunch and a kids menu, Little Rock is a welcoming, family friendly restaurant and a must visit whatever the season. You won’t want to miss the glorious views and high quality food, drinks and service.
